Within the last 4 to 6 weeks two very high profile individuals, one an Egyptian banker and the second the head of the international Monetary Fund were charged with assault and allegedly raping a housekeeper. Both events occurred in New York City.
As with anything else, high-profile cases bring to the public’s attention the seriousness of a crime. It seems until a high profile individual gets arrested that there’s not that much publicity about the problem. In this particular case it’s assaults on women at work.
Although the number of cases of women getting sexually assaulted at work has decreased it is still a major problem. Nurses, for example, for some reason are subject to more assaults on the job than any other occupation. Perverts seem to flock to parking garages waiting for off-duty nurses to get to their cars.
That has prompted several hospitals throughout the country to authorize their nurses to carry self defense products like pepper sprays and stun guns.
Getting back to the New York City situation, the trades Council, which represents 29,000 hotel workers, is authorizing self defense classes for their women employees.
More and more women are carrying stun guns and Pepper Sprays on the job. What exactly does that say?
