Of all the self-defense items on the market today the vast majority of them are geared towards women. That should come as no surprise because women are the targets of violence in nine out of ten cases. Tasers probably get the most publicity. Pepper sprays are the most widely sold self-defense items in the world. But there is a little-respected self-defense item that is extremely effective, especially for female self–defense-the personal panic alarm.
Some people call it a loud noisemaker. Perhaps that’s a good enough description. Generally speaking they are small hand-held battery-operated devices that emit a very loud noise when activated. They are extremely effective at scaring away an assailant and/or drawing attention to your situation if you should feel threatened.
Imagine you are in a parking lot on the way to your car. A stranger approaches you from behind and scares the living daylights out of you. You warn him to back away, but he keeps approaching. A personal panic alarm, when activated can be heard from as far as 1/4 mile away. If that doesn’t scare him, then someone will hear the alarm and come to your assistance.
Although there are literally hundreds of devices that have alarms in them, most notably stun guns and some pepper sprays, here we are going to discuss personal panic alarms that were specifically designed for that purpose-to make a loud noise. Here are four favorites of women.
The first is an electronic pocket whistle. It emits an ear-piercing 120 dB alarm when activated. It is 4 inches long and has a key ring attachment for easy carrying.
Another popular favorite for women is made by Mace brand and is an aerosol product called the “Screecher.” This has a push button activator which makes a 125 dB alarm that is readily recognized by anyone as a call for help. This does not have a key ring attachment but is small enough to carry in a pocket or purse.
The Keychain Panic Alarm is very popular too because it is so small at 2 1/2 inches long. It emits a powerful 120 dB blast that can be intermittent or continuous. It uses a replaceable battery and is very inexpensive at $8.95.
Fourth is a 130 dB personal alarm that can be attached to your clothing using the clip that comes with it or attached to a purse or briefcase with a lanyard that also comes with the product. If the briefcase or purse is snatched the alarm will sound.
Those are four items personal panic alarms for female self-defense that are all very effective and inexpensive too.
