How Security Lighting Can Help Keep Your Family Safe

The cover of darkness serves as a security blanket for many thieves. Night gives the illusion of security and safety, the ability to move undetected no matter the intention. This is why one of the key things you can do to keep your family and your belongings safe is install security lighting.

Outdoor security lights offer a simple, yet effective way to protect your home by literally shining a light on the problem. And with the recent proliferation of solar, LED and motion-sensor security lighting options, you don’t have to rack up a high electric bill to feel secure.

Here are three of the most common forms of outdoor security lighting and what makes them a standout option for you.

   1.  Outdoor Motion Sensor Lighting

Lighting that is triggered by motion offers you a great chance to startle a burglar – if you’ve ever gotten caught in a motion-sensor floodlight, you’ve probably experienced that “deer in headlights” feeling. They also help to reduce electric bills by only triggering when motion is present. One of the drawbacks to motion sensor security lighting is that the direction and position of the lights must be fairly precise in order for them to do the most good.

Also, if you live in a rural area where critters abound, you might find your yard or driveway flooded with white light for no reason. The same is true if you live in an urban area where foot or auto traffic could trip the sensor unintentionally.

    2.  Solar Security Lighting

Using solar-powered security lighting is a terrific alternative for environmentally conscientious consumers. Charged solar cells greatly reduce your reliance on electricity and make it a cheaper security alternative. Of course, solar-powered lights come with their own challenges, including sensitivity to inclement weather that can prevent energy production. Even dust can have a detrimental impact, so do your research on your area and its weather conditions before investing in this lighting.

     3. LED Security Lighting

LED bulbs are also a great environmentally-friendly alternative. Unlike incandescent bulbs, LEDs are measured in lumens, not watts. Watts are the unit of measure that draw upon electricity and determine how much energy it takes to power your desk lamp or outdoor lighting. In general, watts can draw up to 5 times more energy than the equivalent amount of lumens. LED lights are also brighter in general than typical light bulbs and generate less heat.
