A good safe is not cheap but then again having your home burglarized is an expensive proposition. So the question is when do you need a safe? Is it a question of space? Many safes are small enough or designed that they can be put in the floor or a wall. Even diversion safes are disguised as products with hollowed out inside to hold cash.
I think the best way to answer that question is to look at it in terms of simple economics. If you have enough cash, jewelry, handguns, rifles, or other valuables such as stocks and bonds that for one reason or another you do not want to put it in a safe deposit box at a bank, having a safe is a very simple decision.
Let’s look at a few examples. Last week in a suburb of Chicago one hundred thousand dollars in cash and jewelry was stolen from a home between 8:30 and 11:30 in the morning-so in broad daylight. The burglars broke in through a screened window and made off with the loot. I’m not sure why homeowners would have that much cash and jewelry around without having it in a safe, but they did.
In that particular instance it would make a whole lot of sense to have an expensive safe. And when I say expensive, bear in mind that the term is relative in comparison to what it’s protecting and what your deductible is on your homeowner’s insurance policy. In that case having a safe, would be a no-brainer.
In another example, a man had a collection of valuable hunting rifles. And because he loved to show them off at gun shows, etc. people knew who was, where he lived and what he had. Not so sure that’s a good idea either. But in this particular case having a safe that can hold rifles is a no-brainer too.
If you have nothing to protect in terms of cash or valuables such as rifles or jewelry, then it doesn’t make any sense to have a safe.
But if you have even $2,000-$3,000 worth of jewelry, cash, or other valuables in your home, then it makes sense to invest in a medium priced high-security safe.
A safe that is purchased in consultation with your insurance underwriter may actually save you money on your homeowner’s insurance premiums.
In summation, not everyone needs a safe. But even if there’s any question about it, you should get one to help improve your home security and give you valuable peace of mind.
The clincher is that home burglary happens to one out of every six homes on an annual basis and that the value of goods taken is close to $2000. Don’t be a victim of home burglary. Get a safe and set your mind at rest.
