As many of you know, a close friend of mine lives in Colorado Springs, right at the foot of Pikes Peak just west of Manitou Springs. As you are probably well aware many states, including Colorado, have been in a severe drought for the last 5 to 6 years. That drought can take credit for the dry conditions that have led to some of the biggest wildfires in the state’s history in the last two years.
He lives just north of Fort Carson, home to some of the nation’s bravest warriors. In one 12 hour period within the last few days they received 10 inches of rainfall which is nearly a one year supply. Needless to say, severe flooding ensued all along the front range where the storm continues to rage on, three days after it started.
It got so bad that the University of Colorado in Boulder had to be evacuated. Three people have died as of this writing. Homeless people who have a history of camping along Fountain Creek in Colorado Springs were forced to run for their lives, literally.
In Boulder a 20 foot wall of water roared down a mountain canyon north of the city.
One official described it as a 500 year flood that hit Lyons, a small town of 2,000 in the foothills of the Rockies. That town is completely cut off from the outside world, leaving residents to be on their own for at least three days.
President Obama declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Colorado. The governor has authorized the use of National Guard troops to help. State Highway 36, which is a major thoroughfare from Denver northwest to Boulder, was decimated by the flooding with big chunks of the highway washed away. Law enforcement and emergency officials urged people not to travel because it was too dangerous.
The torrents of rain caused such swift flowing streams of water that one person trying to cross a street nearly got swept away in the torrent.
In Boulder County alone between 25 and 30 roads were closed as of yesterday.
It is actually a major miracle that more people have not lost their lives.
But up in Lyons people are going to be stranded literally for at least three days.
