Dogs As Deterrents To Burglary

Dogs As Deterrents To Burglary

David Artman |

There are a lot of people, criminals included, who believe that a barking dog is one of the best deterrents to burglary. Burglars will tell you that they will not go near a home that has a sound of a barking dog.

Detective Kevin Coffey is a 30 year police veteran and author who offers home security tips specifically on Avoiding Home Burglary. He strongly recommends a dog, even a small variety. “They all have sharp teeth and a way of barking that is unwelcome to burglars.” Of course owning a dog has its shortfalls.

In this article we will give you five real-life examples of how barking dogs scare burglars away.

In our first case a Fort Walton Beach, FL man is accused of climbing a fence into a woman’s back yard, only to be caught by the woman’s dog. The homeowner was mowing her lawn when she heard her dog barking. When she went to check on the dog she saw a man climbing over her privacy fence. The would-be burglar was caught and charged with burglary and trespassing.

In our second example, the family dog was barking so loudly it awoke the residents and scared the burglar away. The burglar was later arrested.

In the UK, the homeowner’s dog barked loud enough to cause a potential burglar to run downstairs and exit the house. The burglar had used a ladder to climb to the first-floor rear window. He was in the process of doing his burglary thing when the dog scared him away.

Our fourth example is from New Jersey where a Burglary Attempt Was Thwarted by the family dog that was barking so loudly it woke everyone up. The homeowners called 911. Police sent patrol officers and a K-9 team to search the area but didn’t find any suspects. They think that the barking dog scared the burglar away before he ever made it into the house.

And just to prove Detective Coffee’s premise about the size of a dog, here’s a story about a would-be burglar that was scared away by what is called an adorable Killer Guard Dog that in fact was a tiny terrier that made enough yapping noise to cause a burglar to escape by climbing two fences as fast as he could.

It is just a proven fact that the sound of a barking dog is one of the top two or three deterrents to home burglars. They just don’t want to go into a house where there is a dog as these stories demonstrate.

The nice thing is that you don’t really have to have a dog to get the same result. Our barking dog alarm a.k.a. the electronic watchdog uses radar technology to protect an area up to 15 feet away. When motion is detected in that area the sound of an angry barking dog begins. The volume of the barking and the distance protected are both adjustable. The remote control fob that comes with the product allows you to arm, disarm or press a panic button.

The barking dog alarm is one of the most effective motion activated alarms in the marketplace today. You owe it to yourself to have at least one for your home’s front door and preferably another for your back door.

What are your experiences with barking dogs and burglars? Don’t be bashful!
