Stun devices are the second most popular nonlethal self-defense weapon in the United States. Because of this we get asked a lot of questions about how they work, etc. In this article we will talk about the most commonly asked questions received and give you the answers you need to enhance your knowledge.
What are they?
Stun devices fall into two broad categories: shooting and non-shooting nonlethal self-defense weapons. There are several subcategories. Non-shooting devices are hand-held products that use high voltage and low amperage to disable an assailant for as long as 10 minutes. They must be applied to an assailant for the product to work.
The second category is shooting devices that propel a probe with amazing force up to 15 feet away. It can disable an assailant as long as 30 minutes. These devices use high amperage and low voltage. A good example is the popular taser device.
How do they work?
Both categories of stun devices work essentially the same way. The electrical current overloads the communication between the brain and the nerves that control muscular movement. There is pain involved, but the main effect is to jam the nervous system so that movement is nearly impossible.
Are they legal?
Stun devices are not legal in several states. They are illegal in several foreign countries as well. But we should note that laws are changing all the time. As citizens demand change and lawmakers respond to that demand, laws will eventually allow them everywhere.
Do you need a license to carry them?
No license is required to carry any stun device, however, Taser International requires a felony background check before their products can be activated. So if you have a criminal record, you may not want to get one.
Can you carry one on an aircraft?
Current TSA regulations do not allow these nonlethal self-defense weapons to be carried on board an aircraft, however, you may check it in your luggage.
How effective are they?
Shooting stun devices such as the taser, that use low voltage and high amperage, are nearly 100% effective. Regular stun devices are close to 90% effective. They both can disable an assailant long enough to get away from a dangerous situation and seek help.
Those are some of the most commonly asked questions we get about stun products.
By the way they are used by over 17,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States as a testament to their effectiveness.
We have 123 models of Stun Devices including 17 models of shooting stun guns.
The Taser X26C has a range of 15 feet and has more features than any other civilian taser model.
