It is almost that time of year when bears are finished hibernating. In another couple weeks when that happens they will come out of their winter habitat and boy oh boy are they hungry! Two times a year they get exceptionally aggressive; early spring as they come out of their hibernation, and early fall when they start their hibernation.
At these two times of the year, bears are looking for food. And when bears are looking for food you best not get in their way. Bears can smell food from great distances. So homeowners should take precautions and make sure that their trash is covered and if a grill is used outside that equipment is well protected because bears will go to any lengths to get at food when they’re hungry. They have been known to break in screen doors to get into homes.
That is why it’s a good idea for you to keep some bear spray around your house. We carry two brands. They both do exactly the same thing but have slightly different capabilities
Guard Alaska can spray up to 15 to 20 feet away and Mace Brand bear spray can spray up to 35 feet away.
And next week’s safety tip we will cover the proper way to use bear spray. Like anything else, there is a good technique to get maximum effectiveness. We will share that next week!
